UNDERSTAND THE TOTAL COST

One withdrawal can have several charges.

The ATM's own fee

The ATM operator may charge for a withdrawal, separately from your card provider. Read the fee screen before confirming. A travel card does not automatically remove this charge.

Your card's charges

Check your issuer's foreign-currency markup, cash-withdrawal fees and any credit-card cash-advance interest. Compare card payments and cash withdrawals separately.

The conversion offer

If offered a charge in NOK instead of Thai baht, that is a separate currency-conversion offer. Choosing THB avoids that offered conversion; your card's own fees can still apply.

Sources: Visa's guidance on paying in local currency and Wise's explanation of issuer and ATM fees.

At the terminal or ATM: look for THB.

Declining the ATM's conversion is different from declining its withdrawal fee. Read both screens. If the total cost is unclear, cancel before confirming and compare another option.

Before leaving home

CONNECTED ON ARRIVAL

Compare roaming, a local SIM and an eSIM.

Check the total price for your trip length and data use. An eSIM can be convenient, but is not automatically the cheapest option.

Your existing plan

Ask your operator whether Thailand is included and what happens when your allowance runs out. Check voice calls and data separately.

Local SIM or eSIM

Compare local operators' current tourist offers, coverage and registration requirements. Check where you can get support.

Travel eSIM

Check that your phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked. Read the package's activation timing, validity, data allowance and whether it includes calls.
